v12 workstation crashes on latest Win10 fast ring builds

0
0

Workstation 12.1.1, 12.5.0, and 12.5.2

I upgraded to build 14986 of the latest Win10.  After rebooting for upgrade, system would BSOD after Win10 was sitting at login screen.  It would either happen when I typed in the password in or shortly thereafter.  Letting the system sit there for a while without typing into the login box would not produce a BSOD.

The BSODs I would get indicated crashes in all sorts of different components with different codes and did not point to one component in particular.  Very random.

Could not get past the login screen, so was looking for a quick and dirty solution.

After reading that this is a problem in VirtualBox and they solved it by adjusting video card settings, and taking into account that these latest "creator" builds from Microsoft are supposed to focus on 3D, I took a stab and went to the preferences panel for the VM and turned off "Accelerate 3D graphics".  That did the trick.

Reading through other forums, this problem may also exist in earlier builds such as 14931.

Hopefully this info will be useful to others with this problem, and the Workstation developers.

BTW, I had this happen on two different computers with two different Win10 VM installs, using Workstation 12.1.1, 12.5.0, and 12.5.2.  Both computers were running v1607 of Win10.

Yosemite Guest OS on Sierra Host OS - possible?

0

Hi

My office's 5 ancient 2009 spec iMacs are on their last legs and I am going to have to replace them in early 2017 with the new models. I know that these latest iMacs cannot run any OS older than they ship with - which rules out downgrading - but does that apply to a Yosemite VM too?

I have some plugins that won't load into Sierra based installations (have tried on a non critical machine here) and there is no upgrade path due to the version we are running so I'd have to stump for a full copy on each machine that I run here - mucho expensive!

Would a Sierra host OS run a Yosemite OS guest in Fusion 7.5 Pro?

Many thanks

Hello,

Running an earlier OS X version like Yosemite as a guest OS within VMware Fusion on a host that runs macOS is one of the normal use cases and does work pretty well.

You didn't mention what type of software the plugins are for. There's a few use cases that a virtual OS X is not so great and it originates in there not being 3D support on OS X / macOS guest OS's. So if you are depending on specific features there then it might not work.

Hi Jeff,

so you should check the status of your deployment, is it stopped?

The statement from the documentation is stating that during the restart operation of Nova, you will not be able to interact with the service  (ex. launch new instances, etc...) but existing VMs are not affected by this operation.

Hope this helps!

Re: Workstation 12.5.2: cannot boot from physical disk after VM shutdown

Thing is that the vm with a physical disk worked before with this same windows 10 host and vmware workstation version. I only wanted to re-install windows on that vm and use the vm for some other purpose. I also did some other partition maintenance on that hard disk, deleted some other partitions I didn't use. With this I also deleted the physical partition associated with the guest vm. And as done before I recreated a new raw primairy partition with no drive letter assigned and linked it with a new vm, no problems so far. This all worked fine and I could normally install windows to it and even rebooting is no problem.. until I power down the vm. When I power it up again I get the error as shown in the attached image in my opening post. I am known with this error and as suggested in the error you have to remove the hard disk from your vm and add it again, that worked before. But now windows won't boot anymore, but if you boot from the windows installation dvd the setup sees the (physical) hard disk en can even install windows again on it and boot from it... until I power down the vm.

I'm not sure, but it looks like the mapping from the virtual partition to the physical parition is damaged or something when you power down the vm. Or maybe it's something with the master boot record.

Hi Wila

Thanks for the speedy reply. These plugins are all for Apps within the Adobe CC 2015/17 suite, but are not 3d relevant.

So the restriction in place that prevents downgrading to Yosemite on the iMac's actual hardware (which I believe is something to do with the GPU) is irrelevant when it's powering a VM?

Thanks

Hi!

Simplest way I see it: set NTP on the ESXi hosts executing the OpenStack instances. The hwclock in the GuestOS should be passed by the underlying hardware.

Hope this helps!

Both server are installed with Mellanox Card.

Where is the "handshakeTimeoutMs" defenition for SSL handshake/timeouts in ESXI 6.X?

0
0

I was getting this "alarm.HostConnectionStateAlarm changed status from Green to Red " and I remember in ESXi 5.X you would edit that value in /etc/vmware/rhttpproxy/config.xml

however in all the ESXi 6.0 hosts I looked at, none of them have a "handshakeTimeoutMs" definition like they did before.

(Ref: KB 1020210)

Does anyone know where that's defined now in 6.X ?

TIA!

We have a 7.0.1 environment and all of our floating pools are set to refresh automatically on logoff.  I recently been having issue and while looking around i noticed on my storage that  all teh desktop folders in each pool have multiple folders with underscores ( DESKTOP-1, DESKTOP-1_1, DESKTOP-1_2, etc).  Is this normal or do i have an issue??  Any suggestions or comments are invited.  Thanks

Re: New DR setup using SRM

1. SRM documentation: VMware Documentation Library

2. See SRM documentation and EMC SRA documentation for your array & SRA

3. Yes, SRM supports customizing IP addresses as part of failover. Details in the documentation.

4. Cisco OTV allows for a stretched layer 2 network between 2 sites. This would allow for a VM to run at either site with the same IP.

No USB devices connecting with after latest Windows Update

0

I am running VmWare Workstation 12.5.2 build-4638234 and I have had no issues with connecting USB device until now.

My Windows 10 host was updated to Version 10.0.14986 Build 14986 and since then I cannot connect any USB devices to any of my VMs, Ubuntu, Windows 7 and Windows 10.

I always get a pop-up error message telling me this is a driver error.  Has VmWare tested with the latest build?

Shared Folders Not Connected After Windows Update

Every time my Windows client VMs are updated, Windows Update, the HGFS driver appears to be broken.  I have to uninstall vmware tools and reinstall every time this happens.  Using the option to repair the vmware tools never works.  Is there a fix for this coming in new releases of the vmware tools?

Re: How to get the customized IP rules and IP details of the VM from the recovery site with post power on script?

Other than the IP customization being documented in SRM (including the IP customizer tool if used), VMware doesn't provide any other tools/scripts.

You could write some kind of script and run it on the VM. SRM supports running scripts as part of a recovery plan. You could also just have the script run at power on.
