Across town, presumably, there was the Winger family reunion, with extra Britta. Why? Good question. Anyhoo, having indeed made the most important phone call of his life in his pants, Wingers Senior and not quite so senior finally meet over an overcooked bird and some soggy vegetables – or Britta and Winger Jr as they’re more commonly known. After a quick exchange of hair tips, a shockingly unfunny attempt at OAP sex humour and an entirely predictable unburdening, wouldn’t you know it, Jeff’s all better. God only knows why Britta had to be there, but her presence along with the sobbing brother made for distinctly bizarre viewing, and not in the good way. Apparently the show’s new goal is to make all of the characters as well adjusted and ‘relatable’ as possible, and doing away with anything that might make it interesting to watch, including Jeff’s ridiculous desire to prove his Dad wrong every waking second of his life, is clearly the only way to go. What was most disturbing about this week’s episode – aside from the crying twentysomething in Winger Sr’s front room – was that somehow, incredibly, even Donald Glover wasn’t funny. It comes to something when the characters there specifically to make the cultural references work, can’t.The low-key vibe unfortunately wasn’t shared by the other guest-star of the episode, Adam Devine. I’m a fan of Devine from his work in Pitch Perfect and Workholics, but he isn’t given the best character to play. While he set Britta up with plenty of comedic material, he was a broader character than the usually has. It didn’t take away from the episode, but it’s a missed opportunity of a character and Devine.
When not focusing on the Wringer Wreunion, “Cooperative Escapism In Familial Relations” found the rest of the study group trying to escape Shirley’s family Thanksgiving. This leads to a Shawshank Redemption parody – though, as Abed admits, was really closer to Prison Break. It may not have been as successful as the rest of the episode, but it was consistently funny and continued the Community trend of not just being a movie parody. Even though Abed did a Morgan Freeman voice and a tunnel was dug, it was more about everyone realizing Thanksgiving is unpleasant no matter who you experience it with.
That brought us to the emotional payoff of the episode, which was the study group coming together over a Thanksgiving dinner. It could have – and should have – been sappy, but it somehow worked for me. For the season two or season three Jeff, setting up a dinner for everyone would have been out of character. But during the end of season three and start of season four, Jeff has experienced a character change, and it has been effective enough that his act of kindness was believable.
